Recommended Low-Budget Accommodations in Boquete, Panama

A good hostel/pension is sometimes hard to come by, so we’ve done the hard work for you and have picked out the best low budget accommodations in Boquete to make planning your trip super easy. We can even make the reservation for you so you can be assured that nothing was lost in translation. :)

What is a hostel? A hostel is an accommodation option with open and shared quarters. There is usually a shared kitchen, shared dining area and shared living room amongst all guests. This promotes mingling and a more social atmosphere. There is usually a mix of rooms such as shared dormitories with bunk beds and private rooms. Sometimes a hostel will have all shared bathrooms and some rooms may come with a private bathroom.

Another variety of hostel is called a “pension”. A pension is a mix between a hostel and hotel, but there are only private rooms. Pensions aren’t as open as hostels and may not include a shared kitchen. There is usually a mix of private and shared bathrooms, depending on the room type.

In Boquete, we work with two hostels and one pension. All three are lovely places to stay; perhaps a bit simple, but if you are looking for a low-cost option, these are your best bets. We personally have known the owners for a long time and can confirm that they are quality lodging options.

Here’s some more detailed information on each low-budget accommodation and why we love them so much…

REFUGIO DEL RIO

Refugio del Rio is the perfect hostel in Boquete - it is right next to a river with a long lawn and lots of fruits trees, it is literally just 5 minutes walking distance from the center of downtown Boquete, and there is a great social vibe so you can easily meet travelers from all over the world. They have a mix of dorm and private rooms, though I highly recommend either the Tree House (it’s almost always booked!) or Ruisenor rooms, which are right along the river each in its own private cabana.

They have recently added re-purposed extra seating in their porch area, making cushions and pillows out of coffee sacs and using pallets to make the seating frames. They also created a super cool pizza parlor using re-purposed wine bottles! To top it all off, there is a huge hot tub for everyone’s enjoyment on the cool nights.

We love Refugio del Rio’s eco-friendly atmosphere and the cool relaxed vibe at their hostel. Check them out and I’m sure you’ll fall for it too!

PENSION TOPAS

If you prefer a more reserved, independent accommodation, Pension Topas is the place for you. All of the rooms are private (private and shared bathrooms) and some are in a separate building apart from the main area. There is a shared area for all guests, but you certainly won’t feel forced to interact with others.

Pension Topas has one of the few outdoor in-ground pools in Boquete and it’s beautiful and perfect for the hot Boquete middays! The property also runs right next to a bubbling stream, which provides for really relaxing sounds.

Perhaps the best part of Pension Topas is the owner, Axel. A relaxed and genuinely sweet German, Axel has lived in Boquete for more than 20 years and knows everything there is to know. He even has his own coffee farm!

HOSTAL GAIA

In a new location right by a calming stream, Hostal Gaia is a beautiful and comfortable hostel that few know about. Its property backs up to Isla Verde Hotel and is just a few meters up the stream from Refugio del Rio Hostel. This is prime real estate for Boquete - just 5 minutes from the main street, yet tucked away in a beautiful urban jungle of trees and nature.

The hostel limits the amount of people it takes, so you will have plenty of space to stretch out and feel at home. There are two dorm rooms, one with 4 beds and the other with 6 beds. Each dormitory has a bathroom inside. Four private rooms for 2, 3 or 4 persons were recently finished and were built by the stream for maximum tranquility!
