Botanical & Medicinal Plant Tour in Boquete, Panama

Without a doubt, the Botanical and Medicinal Plant Tour at Finca Luz is a must-do excursion in Boquete! You don’t want to visit Boquete without stopping here to learn about some really interesting and common plants which are used for medicinal purposes.

There are so many good things to say about this tour, the farm, and the people involved, that I don’t even know where to begin! Why don't we start with the tour's history to give you an idea of how the whole thing came together.

This magical journey started when Elizabeth Worley came to Panama in 2002 for a simple vacation. As the story goes, purchasing a property in Panama was the last thing on her mind, until she arrived to Boquete and became enchanted by the mountains under the full rainbows. The moment she stepped onto Finca Luz, located on the Jaramillo mountain overlooking the Baru Volcano, she knew there was something very special there. Without a further thought, she took the leap and purchased the ~12 acre property.

The farm contained hundreds of different types of plants, originally planted 50 years ago by a professor of biology in Panama City. They are still identifying some species on the property, but they have found over 40 plants with medicinal uses. Since the property sat neglected for over 50 years, the soil reclaimed it’s organic roots.

Through the years, Elizabeth eventually moved to Panama, met her mate, Dianne Heidke and together they dove into the amazing ecosystems on their property. Dianne is a trained botanist from Australia and Elizabeth owed a health food store in the United States and studied herbal medicine. Through much sweat and many tears, they have transformed Finca Luz into an incredible walkable biodiverse “green” farm. They have organic coffee, bananas, herbs and dozens of medicinal plants, which they use to make their wonderful line of healing tinctures and salves, “Cloud Forest Botanicals”.

Dianne lead the tour over a large part of the farm (on a beautiful walking trail made from recycled tires), talking in depth about the different plants, how they grow, what part of the plant is medicinal and how they are used.

We covered the 12 plants on the agenda, and Dianne pointed out many more along the path (though there wasn’t enough time to talk in depth about ALL of them!).

Dianne’s knowledge of her plants is remarkable. It’s obvious that she has spent years studying these plants with local Panamanians whose families have used these plants as natural medicine for hundreds of years (or even more!). These natural doctors are called curanderos in Panama (mainly amongst the indigenous groups).

After the walk, we settled down on their expansive covered patio for a delicious organic snack including fruits, cake, coffee and lemonade. Some people in the group had short medical consults with Dianne to test where they are off balance and which healing tincture would work best for their particular situation.

What a better way to end the tour than by sampling some of the farms goods?

We discussed their different products and also Elizabeth’s large array of well-acclaimed books.

After the tour, I really didn’t want to leave. The feeling at Finca Luz is calming and enjoyable, refreshing and comforting. The company that you are with is so interesting and entertaining that it makes you want to talk, share insights, and laugh for hours.

If you have even the slightest interest in living healthier, having an eco-friendly lifestyle, trying natural medicine instead of man-made poisons, you HAVE to visit Finca Luz and meet Elizabeth and Dianne when you are in Boquete!
