Official DELE Exam Authority and Organizer: Instituto Cervantes

Spanish as a foreign language diploma (DELE) logo

DELE stands for "Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera". These diplomas are the only officially accredited qualifications issued by the Ministry of Education, Social Policies and Sports of Spain that are administered internationally and recognized worldwide by private companies, chambers of commerce and public and private educational systems and centers.

The DELE Spanish Exams are issued by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Education, Social Policies and Sports. The DELE Diplomas are the single most important official Instituto Cervantes' Logo qualifications that provide accreditaion for the different levels of competence and command of the Spanish language. The Instituto Cervantes is the official governmental organization who promotes the Spanish language and is in charge of the DELE Spanish language exams. The University of Salamanca collaborates with the Instituto Cervantes in the development of the examinations and in the marking of the examination papers.

DELE Test Examination Levels for the four DELE Cervantes Diplomas

There are now four levels at which you can take a DELE Spanish Test:

Each student should aim to obtain a specific DELE Diploma taking into account his Spanish level
Habla Ya Panama Levels DELE Exam CEF*
Survival I Starter Level A1, 60 hours
Survival II   A2, 60 hours
Conversational I Certificado Inicial (CIE) B1, 60 hours
Conversational II DELE Intermedio (DIE) B2, 100 hours
Fluency I   C1, 100 hours
Fluency II DELE Superior (DSE) C2, 400 hours

* The amount of hours listed is the average time of instruction needed to complete each level according to CEF.

Be sure to take the DELE examination at the appropriate level for you. If you prepare for the exam with us we will tell you what is achievable in your available time frame.

The first exam has four parts and the other three have five parts each. The main difference in the four exams is the difficulty and time available for each part. To pass each exam you have to pass each individual part. If you would like to know the exact contents of each of these four levels, please read about our level system and syllabus.

The syllabus of our Spanish levels is built under the guidelines of the Common European Framework for Languages and because of this we know exactly how to help you improve each of the skills that you will need to face each part of each DELE exam. All our students hold an interview with our Academic Director and we ask them to complete our Placement Test. In this way we know what you need to learn and in how much time you will learn it.

Dates, Examination Centers & Fees for the DELE Spanish Exam

DELE Spanish Exam Preparation Course

The DELE Spanish Exam is arranged twice a year, in May and in November. In some places an additional DELE Spanish test is offered in August. The DELE Spanish Exam can be taken in nearly all major Spanish Universities and can also be taken in some countries abroad.

If you Sign Up & Register to prepare for the DELE Test at our Spanish School we guide you through out the entire process and make everything easy for you! To register for the test you will have to fill out a registration form provided by an approved examination center, pay the fee for taking the exam and provide documentation to prove that you are not a citizen in a Spanish speaking country. In other words you first need to choose which DELE Exam level you will present, where you'll sit your DELE Test and then register for it. You will then have to hand in all these documents at an approved examination center about two months before the examination date and then you will be provided with documentation that you will have to show on the examination date.

Official registration requirements, exam prices by country, sample examination papers, official dates and examination centers can be looked up at the Institutos Cervantes webpage. There is currently an examination center at the University of Panama in Panama City where students can take their DELE exam after preparing it with us and before leaving the country. When students decide to prepare their DELE Exam with us they pay the fees to have their exam at the examination center of their preference and coordinate with us when to start preparing for their exam. You can also contact the Spanish Embassy or Consulate within your country to seek the nearest examination center to you. It might be possible to prepare for the DELE Exam Abroad, and then present the exam once you are back in your home country. Ask us about your options and we will let you know what is possible and then take you through the whole process!

Course Details for the DELE Exam Preparation

DELE Exam Preparation Course Details

The DELE Exam Preparation course at Habla Ya is offered mainly through One to One Private Lessons taking 20 - 30 hours of private Spanish lessons per week. We also help students prepare for the DELE Spanish Test through group lessons if a group of no more than four students wish to prepare their DELE Exam to obtain the same DELE Cervantes Diploma.

We asses each candidate's Spanish level through a written Placement Test and Oral Interview upon arrival. In this way we are able to determine which of the four DELE Exams you should take and how many hours of lessons are required to achieve that level of proficiency.

Each DELE exam has five different parts, except the first one which has four. We will customize your DELE Exam Preparation Course to focus on those skills that you most need to work on: reading, writing, listening, grammar/vocabulary or speaking.

If you would like to work more time on your conversational skills, then you should consider signing up for our Group 4 PLUS course, and devote the extra hours of One to One Spanish Private Lessons to preparing the rest of your skills necessary for your DELE exam.

Start Dates for DELE Exam Preparation Course at Habla Ya

As the DELE prepration course is given through private lessons the course can start almost whenever you want it to

A DELE Exam Preparation Course can be arranged to start whenever you want to, but we recommend that you to start preparing for the DELE exam at least three months in advance of your DELE Spanish Test examination date.

Please go ahead and complete our Placement Test before registering for the DELE exam and we will tell you your current Spanish level and help you decide which of the four DELE exams you should take.

If we consider that there is not enough time to prepare for the DELE Test that you have already registered for we will unfortunately not be able accept your application for our DELE Preparation Course.

The amount of Spanish lessons you should have depends on your current Spanish level and on the level of the exam that you intend to take. For example, if your were actually placed at the beginning of Conversational I (B1) and your goal was to obtain the DIE (Diploma Intermedio), which requires you to be placed at the end of Conversational II (B2), then we would recommend that you signed up for 160 hours of lessons. If you were at the end of Survival I (A1) and you would like to take the CIE (Certificado Inicial), which is intended for those with a Conversational I (B1) level, then we would recommend that you signed up for 120 hours of lessons. Once you complete our Placement Test we will be able to make a recommendation about what you should do.

Course Rates for DELE Test Preparation Course

The cost for the DELE course is the same as any other course: you pay for each hour of class

The amount of hours you will end up purchasing is the exact amount of hours that you will need to prepare for your DELE Test. You can choose to have between 4 - 6 hours of One to One Spanish lessons per day. Most students will book Private Spanish Lessons because they will be coming on their own. The mini group option is only available if you are coming with a small group of no more than three students to prepare for the same DELE exam and all of you have the same Spanish level (in this case there's a maximum of 6 hours of lessons per day). If it's four students in the same class you would have access to the same rates as our Group 4 Course.

You can also sign up for our Group 4 PLUS 1 or 2 course and devote the additional private lessons to your DELE studies. In case someone has your same Spanish level and wishes to prepare for the same exam at the same time as you, we will let you know. The more hours you purchase, the better the price per hour. Prices are in US dollars.

At Habla Ya we know that it's not easy to pay for something that you haven't seen, in a far distant country, miles and miles away: that is why you can PAY UPON ARRIVAL! No deposit required. But please remember to Sign Up & Register!
